Emergency Warning System Proposed For Steinbach

Emergency Sirens Like This One Could Be Used In Steinbach If System Approved

The mock tornado exercise in Steinbach last week has done what it was supposed to do. It has found some problems that need to be fixed. Emergency coordinator Denis Vassart last night told city council the biggest issue is the lack of a proper early warning sytem for residents. He notes their emergency plan currently calls for the city's emergency vehicles to drive up and down the streets to warn of what's coming.

The emergency coordinator has recommended the City of Steinbach set up an early warning system for tornadoes and other possible catastrophes. City Councillor Roy Enns says it's something council must deal with sooner than later. He notes council has been given several alternatives and will want to deal with this matter within the next year. Emergency Coordinator Denis Vassart says his top recommendation is a network of emergency sirens that would be set up throughout the community. It would cost $50,000 to $75,000.
